Education and Teaching English Semester Abroad Course

Program DescriptionInternational students studying currently in any education-related Bachelor’s level degree program can continue their studies for one semester in Kazakhstan while gaining exposure to the languages and culture of Kazakhstan. This education program includes a focus on teaching English, and students can gain practical experience in teaching English at the secondary and university level while in Kazakhstan.  Students can enroll for one semester and take up to 18 credit hours of courses at KAFU.  The program benefits include: 

  • Enrollment in education courses for 1 semester (usually between 9 and 12 hours);
  • Enrollment in intensive language courses in Russian or Kazakh (if desired), including an individual tutor and practical assignments (between 3 and 6 hours);
  • Enrollment in teaching internships and practical teaching experiences (between 3 and 6 hours)
  • Enrollment in general education or culture courses for 1 semester (usually between 3 and 6 hours)

 Curriculum:  Some of the education and general education courses currently offered in English at KAFU include: 

  • Introduction into pedagogical science
  • Pedagogy
  • Psychology and human development
  • Cultural studies
  • Information technologies in teaching foreign languages
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Public speaking
  • Country studies
  • Assessment in teaching foreign languages
  • Lexicology of the English language
  • Theoretical grammar of the English language
  • Theory and practice of education process
  • English for academic purposes
  • English for special purposes
  • American and British literature
  • Methods of teaching foreign languages
  • Special methods of teaching foreign languages
  • Practicum in Multiple intelligence theory
  • Basics of research in linguistics and pedagogy
  • Second foreign language (Spanish, German, French, Turkish)

 Students should contact KAFU to determine the exact courses available during the semester they wish to study.

Cost:  $1,000 for one semester, not including living, visa and travel expenses.  Students studying at a university with a bilateral tuition waiver agreement with KAFU can, upon approval, study tuition free at KAFU for one semester.

Requirements:  Students must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s level education program at their home university.  They should be able to submit a transcript indicating the courses they have already completed.  Students should also complete and submit an agreement with KAFU. Students must also be able to pass an English proficiency exam, demonstrating at least an advanced-intermediate level of English (this does not apply to students from English speaking countries).

 Schedule:  This program operates in the fall semester (September – December) and spring semester (mid January to mid May).

 Academic credit:  Students will receive an official transcript from KAFU showing the courses they studied during the semester.  KAFU’s education program is fully accredited by the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan, and Institutional and specialized accreditation IQAA, and is a recognized institution internationally. As such, credit from courses taken at KAFU are generally easy to transfer back to the student’s home university.
