Grading system in KZ

Kazakh American Free University uses credit technology aimed at international recognition of the national education curriculum, development of mobility of students and teachers of educational institutions, as well as improving the quality of education and ensuring the continuity of all levels of education. Rules for the organization of educational process according to credit technology in KAFU are developed in order to implement the Law on Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Credit education technology is based on learners’ choice and individual planning of the sequence of subjects studying using credit as a unified workload unit of students and teachers.

The main criterion of completion of the educational process for the bachelor program is the accumulation of at least 129 credits of theoretical learning and at least 6 credits of professional training, at least 2 credits of preparation, writing and defense of a thesis (project) and at least one credit for preparation and taking state examination.

To provide academic mobility and recognition of educational programs (all levels and forms of higher and postgraduate education) in the European educational space recalculation of Kazakhstan credits into ECTS credits is required.

In Kazakhstan 1 credit equals 45 hours for the bachelor program, 60 hours for Master’s professional program, 75 hours for Master’s research and education program, 105 hours for a PhD program.

ECTS credit is a measure of students’ academic workload both in the classroom and during independent study. One ECTS credit is equal to 25-30 academic hours.

Recalculation of Kazakh credits into ECTS credits is implemented by multiplying the KZ credit value by the conversion factor, depending on the workload of 1 ECTS credit for each discipline and level of educational programs:

  1. for undergraduate studies - ranging from 1.5 to 1.8;
  2. for Master’s professional program - in the range from 2 to 2.4, for Master’s research and education program - ranging from 2.5 to 3;
  3. for doctoral studies - in the range of 3.5 to 4.2.

The results are rounded to the whole numbers.

Recalculation of credits of other types of work is implemented the same way using the following conversion factors: training: in-house training – in the range from 0.5 to 0.6, teaching practicum - in the range of 1 to 1.2, on-the-job training - in the range from 2.5 to 3, research practicum  - in the range from 4 to 4.8;

Pre-graduation internship - research work of an undergraduate (doctoral candidate) - ranging from 4 to 4.8;

The final assessment - ranging from 3.2 to 4.5.

Grading system

ECTS grade system includes five positive ratings (from «A» to «E»), «FX» rating, which can be corrected, and «F» without giving credits.

Grading system of the Republic of Kazakhstan is based on the score-rating alphabetic system of grading of educational achievements; it includes ten positive ratings (from «A» to «D»), which provide giving credits and one unsatisfactory grade of «F» without giving credits.
