EXPERIENCE IN SUCCESSFUL OPERATION OF BANKING SYSTEM IN THE USA

Obraztsova YuliyaKazakh-American Free University, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan

My summer internship was located in Dalton and it was my first experience in the USA. I was an intern with Winter@Scoggins company for 2 weeks. Most of my time, I worked with Larry E. Winter and oftentimes I worked with his staff, all of whom appeared to be real professionals. I noticed that his staff worked like a friendly team.  Mr. Winter is a managing partner and he has over 35 years of experience working in the industry. He is responsible for the firm’s strategic planning, accounting, litigation support and business valuations practice.  During thу time I spent with that accounting firm I understood the role of Certified Public Accountants and their service to small and mid-sized  companies within the United States. Also,  I spent time going over the key points of the American free-enterprise system; it is  impact upon American  business, economy, financial institutions and their government  institutions. Then, I spent time studying the types of financial statements utilized by the American business. I utilized a module of Peachtree Accounting software. In addition, I spent two days  at the Georgia State Board of Education learning how to manage the State’s largest department,  with a state wide budget of $24 billion, budgets, reviews the efficiency of the  money allocated to various programs, and the financial reporting systems utilized  in that regard. After that, I worked in the area of financial analysis taking financial statements and analyzing them to determine the conditions of the company. Finally, I spent  time with learning about American system of taxation through payroll, individual, and business tax return.

The second place where I worked was BB@T. It’s one of the largest banks in the USA. I studied the role of personal  financial planning for individuals taking into account banking needs, the investment  market, the personal  risk management needs. When I worked with Scott Allen, who is a Private Banker 2, he told us how to protect business, raise one’s capital, manage cash flow, and manage employees and other necessary information. Also, I had the opportunity to speak with BB@T Vice President. We worked with business plans and she gave me a unique opportunity to make a decision of giving out a loan. She also gave me Financial Projection and Business Plan in case to start my own business.

Undoubtedly, it was a great and unforgettable experience for me. I learnt information that I could apply in my future bank job. I learnt how to work and fill business documents.

In summary, I would like to say that it was a great experience and opportunity to visit America, to see and to feel how people live there. I learnt and understood from this internship several important things:

First, how to manage your own business (I had an interview with people who specialize in this field). Second, how to negotiate with important people (I was twice at negotiations, and it really made sense). Third, I understood how businesspeople make money, and competence to spend and invest them. Fourth, I learnt what teamwork is. And I discovered that is different from our style. Last, I found out advantages of the American system of managing (it was the most interesting for me).

Actually, I learned lots of important information; I gained communication skills and knowledge. I came back with knowledge and skills that I could use in my life. Also, I improved my  English and now I feel comfortable with speaking. I compared American and Kazakh bank  systems, and made a conclusion which probably could help me  improve our bank system.
